Santa Luċija • the first village in the Maltese Islands is the title of a new book in the Gaulitana series (Book no 27) on the history and heritage of Gozo. The book, written by Gozo’s historian Joseph Bezzina, was commissioned by the Fondazzjoni Folkloristika ta’ Klula that is doing wonders to enhance this small hamlet of Gozo.

The title, might one think, is not accurate. However, Santa Luċija encompasses within its confines what is probably the first human settlement in Malta and Gozo. As such, the locality can be called the first village in the Maltese Islands – village in a very generic sense.

The present village is one of the earliest that developed on Gozo in the late Middle Ages. The places of interest range from the ancient caves at Il-Mixta to a Punic sanctuary at Ras il-Wardija, from hills with neat terrace works to valleys brimming with vegetation. These and all the places worthy of a visit, foremost amongst them the village church, are described in detail. The book is concluded by a glimpse at the religious and folkloristic attractions of Santa Luċija. The village is holder of the award European Destinations of Excellence.
